Fish Tales 4x4 Rentals sits in Frisco, right in the middle of the Hatteras Island villages where beach driving is actually permitted. Rent a 4x4 here and, with an NPS ORV permit in hand, you can drive onto the sand at the numbered ramps that give vehicle access to Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches, something a standard rental car can't do.

What to know before you go

Open daily, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Located at 50062 Timber Trail in Frisco, within reach of Avon, Buxton, and Hatteras village
An NPS ORV beach driving permit is required separately and is not included with the rental

Frisco's central spot on the island puts renters within reach of Avon to the north and the Hatteras village ferry dock to the south, where the free NC ferry runs to Ocracoke. Call ahead to check availability, especially during the Memorial Day to Labor Day peak season, and keep NC-12 conditions in mind: the road running the length of Hatteras Island can close during storms, a real factor during hurricane season from June through November.

We enjoyed a family trip to Hatteras and rented a Jeep from Fish Tales for our family. The rental prices were reasonable and the staff were very helpful in providing support, instruction, and assistance. We enjoyed taking the Jeep on the beach as well as on the access roads. We saw wildlife, splashed in puddles, drove to the tip of the island, and also just parked to enjoy some relaxing time on the beach. We look forward to our next trip to the Island and we’ll definitely plan to rent again from Fish Tales.

We’d originally intended to take our own car on the ferry to Okracoke, but there was a two-hour wait so we decided to try something else… and so glad we did. A quick google search pointed us to Fish Tales and Cheryl in the office was great, fixing us up with an amazing jeep. After a quick stop at the nearby Pamlico Deli to stock up on sandwiches, we hit the road. Or rather, the sand. Cheryl gave us a map of all the beach entry points and we had a lot of fun exploring the area. Definitely a fun experience and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Oh, and if you do it, get a BLT from Pamlico Deli to eat on the beach. One of the best I’ve ever had.

10 out of 10 highly recommend! This beats a guided excursion abroad as you can pick up your Jeep and just do your own thing on your schedule. The staff was friendly and informative and the jeep was outfitted to the max and mechanically sound.

Rented a 2 door jeep from them. The price is reasonable but had nothing but issues. First picked it up the radio didn't work nor did any of the charging ports. The side step was already broken and barely hanging on. The ABS and traction control lights were on due to the brakes being bad. And had a check engine light come on causing us a drop it back off earlier than anticipated. I brought this all up in an email and the owner "reviewed" it and denied any cash back.
