Corolla Outback Adventures operates out of Ocean Trail in Corolla, positioned right where paved NC-12 gives way to the open-beach communities to the north. That's the whole draw of this stretch: it's only reachable by high-clearance 4x4, and it's where the Corolla Wild Horse Fund's herd of Spanish mustangs roams free.

What to expect

As a locally based tour and transportation outfitter, the focus here is getting visitors past the end of the pavement and into Carova and the other 4x4-only beaches without needing their own off-road vehicle. Conditions on the beach route shift with tide and sand, so having someone who knows the terrain takes the guesswork out of it.

Corolla's paved road ends just north of here, and everything past that point runs on 4x4 rules the rest of the Outer Banks doesn't have to think about — no gas stations, no paved crossings, sand track only. That's standard for this part of the island, not a warning sign.

Great fun filled tour. Our guide knew what he was doing and he was informative about the horses and the area. I would go again. Ride can be bumpy at times due to riding on the beach and sand.

Visited with a friend on May 12th, 2026, and had an amazing time! Our guide was Craig and he knew so many horses by sight, as well as lots of local history and ecology. Saw a large group of horses right at the start including two foals and a yearling, then got to see lots of both the village/houses and the wilder back country. Would highly recommend!

Amazing experience! Craig is an awesome guide and really put in the effort to provide an educational and memorable experience. He is knowledgeable about the horse herd and dynamics unique to this group, and learning about the local history was super cool! We saw a ton of cool things—the horses, of course, but also osprey, royal terns, and unique local architecture and beautiful OBX backcountry.

Beautiful experience.!! Highly recommend. My husband and I did the evening tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating. I have some health issues and they made sure it was an enjoyable tour.

My husband and I toured with Corolla Outback Adventures and it was such a beautiful experience! It was most definitely our favorite part of our trip to Corolla and a life experience we will remember forever. Seeing wild horses run on the beach was breathtaking! I will say that the ride itself was a bit on the rough side. My husband and I are both in our 20’s, both in good shape and we were a little on the sore side for the rest of the day. So just a little heads up for those who have chronic pain or other issues of that nature, you do get flung around even with a seatbelt. Other than that, a wonderful experience and our guide was very kind and informative!
