From the top, the view opens across the rooftops of Kill Devil Hills to the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the sound to the west.

A beautiful place to visit with the family: the locals are very friendly, the restaurant menus are delicious, and the accommodations are comfortable. It offers the most stunning sunsets and sunrises, along with opportunities for long walks—a truly beautiful destination steeped in history, with the legacy of the Wright brothers adding a special touch of historical connection.

Kill Devil Hills is a must-visit, especially if you care about aviation. Standing where the Wright brothers tested, failed, adjusted, and finally flew makes the story feel real in a way no textbook can. The area does a great job of connecting you to the moment—there’s a strong sense of “this is where it happened,” not just “this is where a sign says it happened.” There’s also a lot of history packed into the site, from the early experimentation to how that first flight changed everything that came after. Even if you’re not an aviation superfan, it’s inspiring to see how persistence and problem-solving turned into something that reshaped the world. If you’re in the Outer Banks, it’s one stop you shouldn’t skip.

What a beautiful place to come and see. You can definitely tell why they came here to test concepts on how to create the first flights! Beautiful sites and probably the highest place in the Outer Banks. It has a lot more parking than you think. Drive around the mound before walking from the main museum.

It is at the top of a fairly steep hill, so it may be hard for some people to climb. On top is a nice monument for the Wright brothers.

Absolutely gorgeous beaches amazing food and the people are super friendly . we went the 1st of May so Hotel fees for right on the beach were super cheap. The beach is very accessible and friendly. Wright's brothers musuem and the lost colony are not to far.
