So is the historic cluster at the island's north end: Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, where the 1580s Roanoke Colony vanished under circumstances still unresolved after more than four centuries; the adjoining Elizabethan Gardens; the Waterside Theatre, where the long-running outdoor drama "The Lost Colony" is performed each summer; and Roanoke Island Festival Park, with its recreated 16th-century ship, across the water in downtown Manteo.

The Heart of Manteo Motor Lodge is a very well managed and very clean basic lodging. The walls between the rooms are cinderblock so it is very quiet. All the rooms were remodeled a couple of years ago. The door locks are keypad based. The parking is easy. I do IT for a law firm in Manteo and Kitty Hawk and this is my go to choice of where to stay.

The staff was friendly and check in was quick and easy. Our room was very clean and the ac worked great. Not a five star hotel, but very nice for the price. A short distance to Downtown Manteo with great shops and restaurants.

This motor Lodge was exceptionally clean and the rooms were very large. The check in was quick and I really like that there wasn't a key card to keep track of, just a door code. The only thing missing in the room were kleenex, that would have been helpful. There was a soap and shampoo dispenser in the shower but no soap at the sink which was in the kitchenette. Very minor issues to me, I would stay here again if in the area.

I paid a little over $250 for this room for one night. We love to fish so we spend our day in the sun and all I wanted was a shower. The hotel called me at 7pm and asked when I planned on showing up. We arrived 830pm after receiving an entry code to access our room since they do not have front desk staff. The ceiling was covered black spots and the shower tub was horrifying. I didn't even want to shower in it. My fiance and I both woke up with lower back pain because of how old and stiff the mattress was. And the older wall unit a/c was either too hot or too cold, no in between. I understand I sound like Goldilocks and that it is peak season but I don't think it is right to charge top dollar for low quality. I hope management reads this to fix these issues. Just pay a little more for a better hotel.

We came early and they let us check in at 11:30am for only $30 extra. Owners and staff were super friendly and the room was clean and perfect. Our reservation was for a queen room and we had a double queen. We will definitely stay again!
