Cape Hatteras / Outer Banks KOA Resort sits in Rodanthe, at the northern end of Hatteras Island's string of villages, just south of the Marc Basnight Bridge where NC-12 crosses Oregon Inlet from Whalebone Junction. It's an RV park and campground inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore, putting guests close to a stretch of undeveloped beach where 4x4/ORV driving is permitted with an NPS permit — something you won't find on the core beaches further north.

Getting There

NC-12 is the only road connecting Rodanthe to the rest of the island, and it closes or washes out during storms with some regularity here — an ordinary feature of life on Hatteras Island, not a rare event. It's worth checking road conditions before a trip, particularly during hurricane season (June through November, with the higher-risk window running August through October).

Exploring the Island

Waves and Salvo are immediate neighbors, and Avon, Buxton, and Hatteras village are a straightforward drive south on NC-12. That puts the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse — the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, though currently closed for climbing due to a cast-iron bracket issue found during restoration — and the free NC ferry to Ocracoke within range for a day trip.

The property's office and check-in run daily from 8am to 8pm.

The cabin we rented was dirty when we arrived. The floor and countertop where dirty where we had to clean before settling in. Also there was a white faced hornet's nest in the ceiling of the porch. Staff was notified that I was allergic to bee stings and we had to wait almost 10 minutes before anyone came. The door to our cabin was not attached properly and very difficult to open/close. This has clearly been like this for a while because the floor was worn out because of the door. The gentleman that came was very nice but all he did was caulk the holes that they were using. By the end of the second day of our trip the hornets had gone through the caulk. The staff in the office was rude and argued with me over our reservation upon arrival. The staff that kept the grounds clean and did the "grunt" work were extremely nice and pleasant. Also found to be extremely expensive compared to other accommodations on the island. Will not stay here again.

Great family campground. Decent accommodations from tent sites, cabins, to rv sites. Large swimming pool with hot tub, and sauna. Has a playground and a large inground jumping pillow. Pet friendly with dog washing stations next to the beach area and they have a dog park. Good memories are always made here!

We rented a cabin which was an excellent way to be steps from the beach on a budget. The best party of this campground is the "train" which gives kids rides through the campground blasting music and spraying them with water. The pool and convenience to the ocean were also incredible. Camp sites are very close together and lack the privacy other places have to offer.

We loved it so much we booked an extra night! This is the best campground we have ever visited. There were so many things to do for our children. They loved everything minute. We picked the coastal cottage and it was luxurious for a smaller cabin. They had everything except a tv. We booked an extra night in the rustic cabin and it was just what you needed to enjoy camping…especially A/C. The pool was huge and the tiki bar was a nice touch. They have daily activities for kids/families. We will be back!

Stayed here over the last week. Cabin was dirty and full of ants upon arrival. Had to wait around for over an hour to get it cleaned and outside sprayed for ants. I will say the employee who cleaned our cabin was very nice and provided good customer service and cleaning. I mentioned the lock didn’t function properly, which was met with excuses. The deadbolt needed to be replaced, key would not engage unless the stars aligned. The bathrooms were disgusting even after being “closed for cleaning”. The shower water smelled like ass. Cabin continued to have ant issues all week. Cabin had a bad smell that even after cleaning, did not go away. AC unit smelled of mold. Campground had ponding water after a rain storm that led to lots of mosquitos throughout the end of the week. Finally, there was a creapy adult man taking pictures/filming in the pool around kids and adult women. Complaint was made to staff, they did nothing, even after saying that this man was complained about earlier for him doing the same on the beach. Left the pool immediately. Beach is amazing but the resort feels less than a resort. Do not plan to return, would not recommend.
