Spring and fall migration are the standout seasons for a visit, when birdwatching along the trail is at its strongest. Outside those shoulder seasons, the trail is still a quiet walk through maritime forest and salt marsh connecting to Currituck Sound. Birders planning a trip specifically for migration activity should aim for spring or fall.

A nice trail that goes through a forested area. It goes through the nature preserve with the wild horses, so there is a chance to see them here. There is a boardwalk area out to the sound between the island and mainland. There is also a ground trail through the woods. The environment is varied for each section of the hike.

Nice trail with a boardwalk to see the marshland bay view. Also a trail off the boardwalk which we took to see the wild horses. We didn’t see any wild horses, but did see their poops multiple places on this trail which was maybe 1-1.5 miles loop. It’s all covered under shades, so that was nice. There’s a small parking lot with a 2 hrs limit. No restrooms.

This is absolutely a gem, with the bonus of seeing the appearance of regular native plant species while surviving the coastal imapcts over time. The parking is fine but not for zippy drivers....pay attention since its past the sign and in a quiet residential spot.

A mostly shaded section of boardwalk as well as natural trail. The boardwalk ends with an overlook across the sound. A short walk down the boardwalk is the natural trail. Staff in one of the visitor centers informed me that, while rare, you may spot some of the wild horses down the natural trail, with your best odds being early in the morning.

Nice boardwalk and easy trail hike. Good parking area. The horses are obviously in the area and have left behind dung. Might get lucky and see some!
