Free and excellent. Bring water and you probably will walk through some clean water at points so but between the heat and sand your feet will dry fast. Very clean, beautiful views, you can see both the canal and the ocean. If you really don’t like heat an umbrella isn’t a bad idea.

it’s a very great view for sunset. we got there about 30 minutes before sunset and the pictures were great. have had many fun times here over the years but if you want it easy especially for kids then go on a day in which it has rained early in the day and the sand will be packed nice for walking! otherwise it’s like trying to walk on granulated sugar.

IF YOU LOVE SAND, AND INTENSE HEAT, THIS IS YOUR PLACE! But seriously this is one of the family's favorite stops, if you're lucky you'll catch a sunset here after at the end of a day where there was some rain, and the sky clears just in time for you to head out to some cool sand, and a beautiful sunset. The new boardwalk extends much further out onto the flat part of the dune, and NO it doesn't go up any hills so you're still gonna have to climb your butts off. The new photo spot they added last season is a great edition as well, like a desert monolith. Enjoy your trip!

We really loved this place. We thought we would stop to look but not hike it. But it was actually very easy and fun even for an older woman with bad knees. We also had a dog with us and she did great. We went very early in the day when the sand was still cool. Parking was ample and free. There are multiple trails into the dunes and we chose the raised boardwalk that had multiple shaded rest stops along the way, even though it was not every long. From there you can enter the sand and make your way up to the top. From certian points, as you look around, there is nothing but sand and it feels like the desert or another planet. Very cool! Bring a hat, water, sunscreen. Its really is not as vast as it looks and can be a quick trip up and down if you wish in a matter of minutes. But there is no shade on the sand and you will likely want to hang out and experience the view

This was the most beautiful experience of my life out of all of the parks that i have been to in the east cost. We saw the most amazing sunset, my kids and i flew kites, and we just had a wonderful time. Free entry and flexible hours. This is highly recommended if you visit obx. Keep in mind that you will need to bring a hat, water, and comfortable shoes. It takes roughly 20 minutes to go from parking to the tallest dune with kids. There is also a huge deck that goes in the park which is awesome for people with wheelchairs. Loved every minute of it. We will definitely come back when we visit again.
