Hatteras Island's first fishing pier, still working the surf since the early 1960s
Avon Fishing Pier has stood over the Atlantic since the early 1960s, the first pier built on Hatteras Island and one of the longest-running fishing spots on this stretch of the Outer Banks. The wooden pier reaches out from the beach in the village of Avon and is open daily from 6am to 10pm, drawing anglers, sightseers, and anyone who wants to walk out over open water.
The pier predates NC-12 as it exists today and has ridden out decades of nor'easters and hurricanes since it first opened. Its weathered, buckled planking gives it a lived-in, uneven look that regulars treat as part of the character rather than a flaw. Avon Pier is one of only two wooden fishing piers remaining on Hatteras Island.
Avon Pier earned a permanent place in Outer Banks fishing lore in 1984, when a world-record red drum weighing more than 94 pounds was landed just off the structure. Red and black drum, bluefish, and king and Spanish mackerel all pass through these waters in season, and the pier keeps a steady run of rod-and-reel regulars from spring into fall.

Really cool place! This pier has a lot of character. It’s only two a piece to walk the pier. If you are in the area and want to fish the pier store has what you need for rent. Parking is limited by the entrance but there is a lot of park near by. If you are in the area check it out!

We had a fun time here. Fished with the kids for about an hour and a half. Three rod rentals, three fishes passes, four sightseeing passes (they cost $2 per person, which is reasonable IMO), shrimp, and other bait for $100. Seemed reasonable to me. Also got some ice cream, which was more reasonably priced than I was expecting. Very windy when we were here Memorial Day 2026. That made it less hot but presented many other challenges. Not too crowded when we arrived at about 1 PM. Sufficient parking and bathroom in the shop. The pier is quite long and, as others have said, a bit irregular (jagged and bumpy), which for me gave it character. Never felt unsafe on it, even with the significant winds. There was plenty of room for all the fishers. The staff were super friendly and helpful, lending some small fishing equipment to us, giving tips, giving a bucket to us for the catch, and making us feel right at home. Daughter ended up catching a small fish that we took home and ate. The viwes were great, and we saw a guy para boarding/sailing. Overall highly recommended.

Wonderful pier!! Only a dollar 💵 to walk out and visit as long as you like! Drinks and refreshments also!! Must see when in Avon!!

Nice pier. Bit twisted from prior hurricanes. Some new boards in place to replace damaged ones. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Friendly environment on the pier.

The Avon Fishing Pier has a beautiful location and the views of the ocean are absolutely worth stopping for. You can tell this is normally a great place for fishing, sightseeing, and watching the sunrise or sunset. The surrounding beach area was peaceful and clean, and it definitely has that classic Outer Banks charm. The only reason for the 4-star review is that the pier was closed to the public during our visit, which was disappointing since we were hoping to walk out and enjoy the full experience. Hopefully it reopens soon because it looks like a fantastic spot when fully accessible. Even so, it was still worth visiting for the scenery and atmosphere.
