Avalon Pier runs straight out into the Atlantic from N. Virginia Dare Trail in Kill Devil Hills, one of a handful of classic wooden fishing piers that give this stretch of Beach Road its identity. It's a fishing pier first — rod and reel over the surf, the kind of pier-house setup with rentals, bait, and tackle that's standard up and down this coast — and it keeps long hours, open daily from 6 in the morning until midnight.

Spot, spanish mackerel, bluefish, and drum move through these waters depending on the season, and the regulars who show up before sunrise tend to know the pattern better than anyone working a boat offshore. You don't need a rod to get something out of it, either — walking out to the end puts you well past the breakers, with a long, open view up and down the beach and one of the better spots on this part of the Outer Banks to watch the sun come up over open water. Shoulder-season mornings, before the summer crowds arrive, are an especially good time to catch it quiet.

One of our favorite sunrise spots in the OBX. Great picture spots are underneath the pier, and to the right side where the sun breaks the horizon. It’s a wonderful place in the evening as well, I think we paid $2.00 to go out on it to get the last day’s light along the shoreline, it was fun to talk to the fisherman who were eager to show you their catches, enjoy some live music, and the staff is absolutely fantastic. The guy at the desk told us everything they had seen at the pier this week. Also go down to the beach after dark and check out the ghost crabs too!

cool little place. we got the chicken tenders, french fries and hamburger. all were excellent. loved the seasoning on the fries. and the tenders were perfect. very friendly bartender and a cool pier to walk out on. nice arcade. reasonable prices. it's free to walk on the pier if you get a drink or food. plenty of parking. you can sit at the bar and eat and they also have outdoor seating. very cool place.

Great place to hang out, enjoy some food and the sun. The staff inside the start of the pier are friendly. Directions are clear and simple. Great views as well!

Nice pier. A little small, but we'll set up and not too busy! Caught a few small fish, but nothing big.

We were at the Avalon Pier several times during our stay on the Outer Banks. One day we had drinks at the bar. We checked out the upper deck. That would be a great place to hang out in warmer weather! We went on the beach the day after the big snow storm and the waves were crazy. It was quite a site!
